Other Interests

Aside from my more academic and family interests, I:

  1. Am an avid sports fan, attending most Hamilton home football, basketball, and hockey games. I watch the Yankees quite regularly on T.V., though I never have been so enamored with either the N.Y. Giants or the Knicks.
  2. Used to play a great deal of bridge (I accumulated several Master Points when in high school) and would still like to return to the game. In the meantime, the game of Hearts is my first love.
  3. Have never met a crossword puzzle I could pass by, though the New York Times on Friday has sometimes given me doubts about my ability.
  4. Love to slice and chop. There was a time when ping pong headed my list of late afternoon activities, but, since the college did away with the ping pong room, I have not kept it up and would have to work at bringing my game back up to par.
  5. Grunt a lot. The Fitness Center and various forms of weight lifting occupy some of my time almost every day. Right now I am off considerably the 250 lb. bench press that I did a few years ago.
  6. Love flowers and gardening, though the deer in the backyard have made the growing of vegetables almost impossible.
  7. Have always loved music. My tastes are fairly catholic, but I particularly enjoy Baroque orchestral music and both American and Celtic folk songs. I taught myself the basics of the guitar and have written a couple of songs.
  8. Am particularly attracted to 19th Century American art (Thomas Cole, Frederic Church and the Hudson River School, Winslow Homer, Arthur Bowen Davies, John Sloan and the Ash Can School, Frederick Remington). Among the European artists I am particularly attracted to are Hieronymous Bosch, William Blake, and Odeon Redon. Among the Chinese artists I especially like are Ma Yuan, Liang Kai, and Ni Tsan. I have actually offered public lectures on Davies, Bosch, and Blake.
  9. Love my church (Unitarian Universalist Church of Utica) and the people there.  What an interesting community of friends!!!
